Oxygen Evolution Reaction Activity of Sr<sub>2</sub>Ta<sub>2</sub>O<sub>7</sub> and Sr<sub>2</sub>Nb<sub>2</sub>O<sub>7</sub> Surfaces

Oxide materials with a perovskite-derived layered structure often show better photocatalytic performance compared to nonlayered of similar composition. Here we investigate the catalytic activity for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) on surfaces Carpy–Galy oxides Sr2Ta2O7 and Sr2Nb2O7. We find that (010) surface parallel layering shear plane is not relevant photocatalysis. The (100) perpendicular this plane, other hand, can catalyze OER, at least Sr2Ta2O7, whereas Sr2Nb2O7 inactive OER without cocatalyst, both in agreement experiment. is, however, only retained while does assume reconstructed stepped via Sr dissolution which predict be thermodynamically favored. Engineering into long-lasting photoelectrodes thus has focus exposing facets as well preventing dissolution, example, high concentration electrolyte.
